Much of present day Larnaka is built over the original site of Ancient Kition. Kition was an important ancient city, with a history stretching back some 3000 years. Excavations of ancient Kition were begun by the Swedes in the 1920s and continue today. The main site of interest is Area II, where a wooden catwalk provides a view of ongoing excavations. The ruins are of the Phoenician resettlement on top of Late Bronze Age foundations. A variety of interesting ancient sacred sites have been uncovered here. The main visible structures are those of a large shrine that was rededicated to the goddess Astarte and four small earlier temples.
