This beautifully cloistered monastery is situated next to the Square in Ayia Napa and is an oasis of calm amidst the hustle and bustle of the town. It was built around 1570 by the Venetians and stands on the site of a cave where an illuminated icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered by a hunter. Outside the south gate is an enormous sycamore tree which is said to be more than 600 years old. A marble fountain dating from 1530 stands in the courtyard. The monastery flourished until the 1800s and is still used as a place of worship today.
