The village of Pyla is the only place in Cyprus still inhabited by it’s original Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot inhabitants. There is a UN peacekeeping presence here and a watchful Turkish military lookout high above the village. The main feature of the village is the Village Square, where a red and white turkish coffee shop is opposite a blue and white Greek coffee shop. In the middle of these two is the referee’s chair, positioned outside the UN watchtower. Photography is not allowed here. The Greeks and Turks appear to live alongside each other happily, and get on with their own lives quietly. Poplular Greek Cypriot singer Anna Vissi comes from this village.
